Michael Lawston > First Investors Division Manager

""I look forward to recruiting, training and developing the future leaders of First Investors."

Advice to Others: Be passionate. Seek out advice and be willing to accept counsel from seasoned professionals. Treat others the way that you would want to be treated. Approach each day with a short-term sense of urgency, while always maintaining a long-term perspective.
Years With First Investors: 10
Prior Occupation: Student, Caddie

As a senior in college, I was not exactly sure what I wanted to do professionally. I did not want just any job. I watched many of my friends graduate before me and take any old job that came along. Initially, they seemed to be happy with their decisions; however, within a short period of time, most had realized that their job was not something they would want to do for the rest of their lives. Since they had little or no opportunity for advancement and growth, many of my friends changed jobs hoping to find something better.

As I went through the interview process, I learned that a career at First Investors would give me an opportunity to develop a business with the support of a large, reputable company. I liked knowing that every day and every hour I put in was an investment in my business and my future. I was also excited to learn of the unlimited opportunity for growth and the potential for advancement into management.

The fall of 1999 was an exciting time for investors, as many markets reached all-time highs. Soon to come though, were three of the worst years since the Great Depression 2000, 2001, and 2002. It was during these three years that I learned the value of the First Investors Three-Step Approach. Even during these years, my business and clientele continued to grow. I learned that most people do not have a financial game plan, and without proper guidance and direction, many will make poor choices. I liked knowing that I was making a tangible difference in the lives of my clients.

As my career as a representative progressed, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a team of knowledgeable veterans, who were always willing to help me along the way. They encouraged me to be a team player, and to welcome any opportunities to help out with recruiting, training, and mentoring. They explained that, if I wanted to be a manager, I needed to develop my skills in these areas. I eagerly embraced the opportunity to mentor and help out with recruiting and training. As I involved myself more with these activities, I knew that a management career would be ideal for me.

In May of 2007, I was promoted to Division Manager. I want to thank my managers for their guidance and support. Most of all, I would like to thank Crystal and my family for all of their encouragement. I am excited to have the opportunity to help representatives build rewarding careers, and look forward to recruiting, training and developing the future leaders of First Investors.
